When someone in your area searches "plumber near me" or "accountant in Manchester," Google decides in milliseconds which businesses to show at the top. Local SEO is the process of making sure your business appears in those results. For small UK businesses that serve a local area, it's the highest-ROI marketing activity you can do โ and much of it is free.
When someone searches for a local business, Google shows three types of results: the Map Pack (the three businesses shown on a map at the top), organic results (standard website links below), and paid ads (marked "Sponsored"). Appearing in the Map Pack is the single most valuable thing a local business can do online โ clicks from it are free and the intent is extremely high.
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the most important free tool for local search. If you haven't claimed it yet, go to business.google.com and do it today. Once claimed:
Important: Your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) must be identical everywhere online โ your website, Google, Facebook, directories. Even small inconsistencies (St vs Street, Ltd vs Limited) can hurt your rankings.
Reviews are one of the most powerful local ranking factors. Businesses with more reviews, and higher average ratings, consistently outrank those with fewer. The simplest way to get more reviews is to ask โ send every happy customer a direct link to your Google review page. A text message or email after a job is completed works well.
Respond to every review, positive or negative. Businesses that respond to reviews rank better and convert better than those that ignore them.
Your website needs to tell Google clearly what you do and where you do it. For a Manchester plumber, that means having "Manchester plumber" and related terms naturally throughout your page content โ in headings, body copy, image alt text, and page titles. Don't keyword-stuff, but don't be vague either.
Create individual location pages if you serve multiple areas. A page specifically targeting "plumber in Stockport" will rank far better for that search than a generic homepage.
Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites โ directories, review sites, local business listings. Key UK directories to list on include: Yell, Thomson Local, Yelp, FreeIndex, Checkatrade (for tradespeople), and any industry-specific directories relevant to your sector.
Backlinks โ links from other websites to yours โ remain a major ranking factor. For local businesses, the most valuable are links from other local Manchester businesses, local news sites, local chambers of commerce, and local business associations. Sponsoring a local event, joining the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, or getting featured in a local news article can all generate valuable local backlinks.
