When Should You Redesign Your Website? โ€” 8 Clear Signs

Most business owners know when their website looks dated โ€” but knowing when to actually do something about it is harder. A redesign costs money and time, and it's tempting to keep putting it off. But in many cases, an outdated website is costing far more in lost business than a redesign would cost to fix. Here are eight clear signs it's time.

Sign 1 โ€” It Was Last Updated More Than 3 Years Ago

Web design moves fast. A website from 2021 or earlier likely has an outdated look, won't meet current technical standards, and may not be optimised for how Google ranks sites today. If you can't remember when it was last updated, that's your answer.

Sign 2 โ€” It's Not Mobile-Friendly

If your website looks fine on a desktop but breaks on a phone โ€” tiny text, horizontal scrolling, buttons that are hard to tap โ€” you're in serious trouble. Over 60% of searches happen on mobile. Google ranks mobile versions of sites first. A non-mobile-friendly website in 2026 is a major handicap.

Sign 3 โ€” It Loads Slowly

If your Google PageSpeed score is below 50 on mobile, your site is too slow. Slow sites rank lower on Google and lose visitors before they've even seen your content. This is often fixable without a full redesign, but older sites sometimes can't be optimised without being rebuilt from scratch.

Sign 4 โ€” Your Competitors Look Better

Have a look at the top three competitors that appear when someone searches for your service in your area. Do their websites look significantly more professional than yours? If so, potential customers are making that comparison and sometimes making a decision based on it โ€” before they've ever spoken to you.

Sign 5 โ€” It's Not Generating Enquiries

If your website gets visitors but generates very few enquiries, something is wrong โ€” either with the design, the copy, the calls to action, or all three. Sometimes this is fixable with targeted improvements; sometimes the site needs a more fundamental rethink.

Ask yourself: How many enquiries did your website generate last month? If you don't know, you don't have proper analytics set up โ€” which is itself a sign something needs addressing.

Sign 6 โ€” Your Services or Pricing Have Changed

If your website still shows services you no longer offer, prices that are years out of date, or doesn't mention important new services you've added, it's actively misleading potential customers. This erodes trust even before someone contacts you.

Sign 7 โ€” It's Hard to Update

If making a simple change to your website requires calling a developer or navigating a system so complicated you've given up trying, that's a problem. You should be able to update prices, add new photos, and change opening hours yourself without technical help.

Sign 8 โ€” You're Embarrassed to Share It

This is the most honest test. When you meet someone at a networking event and they ask for your website, do you feel proud to share it or do you find yourself making excuses? If it's the latter, you already know the answer.

What Does a Redesign Actually Achieve?

Done well, a redesign doesn't just make your site look better โ€” it makes it work better. Better conversion rates, better Google rankings, more enquiries, and a stronger brand impression. We regularly see businesses double their enquiry rate after a properly executed redesign.
